Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of catcher Luis Alen to a contract for the 2014 season. Alen, 28, hit .315 with five home runs, 59 RBI and a career-high nine stolen bases for the Goldeyes last season. He is the longest serving catcher in Goldeyes history, having already spent five seasons with the organization. Alen is poised to become one of four players in franchise history to play six or more seasons with Winnipeg. “Obviously, Luis is one of my most favourite players that weve ever had wear a Goldeyes uniform,” Forney said. “In my opinion, hes the best duel-threat catcher there is in independent baseball. Offensively, hes a very consistent .300-hitting catcher that has the ability to drive in a lot of runs and produce a great on-base percentage. He doesnt swing and miss very much. Behind the plate, hes super at receiving and does a great job of calling games. He has a real understanding of what works and what doesnt work in this league.” Hailing from San Francisco, Venezuela, Alen has a career .315 batting average with Winnipeg, which sits third in franchise history for Goldeyes players with a minimum of 750 career at-bats. Hes hit 29 home runs and added 261 RBI in 465 career games, which trails only Max Poulins 676 games played for the most by a Goldeyes player. Among other career Goldeyes records Alen is chasing, he needs 11 doubles to pass Fehlandt Lentini, 59 RBI to pass Harry Berrios and 95 hits to pass Poulin. Alen was signed as a free agent by the Florida Marlins in 2003 and played three seasons in their system. After playing in Italy in 2006, he joined the Goldeyes for the 2007 campaign. He was then signed by the New York Mets and played from 2008-2009 in their organization. Alen came back to Winnipeg in 2010 and has played the last four seasons with the Goldeyes. The Goldeyes now have 14 players signed for the 2014 season, including seven pitchers and seven position players. Nike Air Max Aanbieding Dames .C. -- The Bobcats announced theyve signed centre Justin Hamilton to a 10-day contract. The NHL and Sportvision announced on Saturday a partnership to revolutionize the collection of data in the game of hockey. With tracking chips implanted into pucks and the back of players jerseys, Sportvision will be able to gather previously unattainable data from all over the ice by using a series of infrared cameras placed around the arena that will read the chips. The location of each player and the puck, as well as the speed of the puck and each player, are among the data that can be collected at a rate of 30 times per second. Hockey is an incredibly hard sport to follow, said Hank Adams, the CEO of Sportvision. It is very dynamic. It is very fast. Players change shifts dynamically during the game. You have guys coming on and off the ice, and fans at home cant see that. With this technology, we can very simply tell fans who has come on, who has come off, how long their shift was. It can be very simple storylines like that, or very complex storylines; when you collect this data over a long period of time, you can really start helping fans understand the game better and maybe even help coaches understand the game better. What happens with the penalty kill against a power play in certain formations. We can start mining this very deep data. This is Sportvisions first venture into hockey. Were excited about trying to bring that in-arena experience into the living room, said NHLPA special assistant to the executive director, Mathieu Schneider. Thats something that weve talked about for years and years -- that the experience at the rink doesnt translate to home. As technology gets better, were able to see more of that. Saturday nights usage of the technology during the All-Star Skills Competition was just a test run. Sportvision will meet again with the NHL and NHLPA to discuss the next steps forward. While were excited about doing this test, were not exactly sure where this will all take us, said Gary Bettman, NHL commissioner. This is, if I can coin a phrase, in the embryonic stages of a work in progress, but ultimately we are hoping to deliver the kind of data that will create insights and tell stories that avid and casual hockey fans will enjoy. In short, we are attempting to embark upon a journey that hopefully will enable us to create and then maintain a digital record of everything in our game and compile a complete digital history. ' ' '
